UK VI English Language Requirements

The Home Office expects Applicants to prove their knowledge of the English language as part of their immigration application.

For your results to be accepted, your test must:

– be on the list of approved English language tests
– have been sat at an approved test location
– have been awarded in the two years before the date of your application

Below are some examples of the different types of test available at approved locations:

Further Leave to Remain (A1) / Tier 2 (Sportsperson) (A1)
For Further Leave to Remain/Tier 2 (Sportsperson) you must pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) in at least CEFR level A1 in Speaking and Listening.

GESE Grade 2 exam (CEFR A1)
– 6 minute speaking and listening test
– Speaking and listening only
– Provisional result received in 24 hours
– Certificate usually sent within 7 days

Further Leave to Remain (visa extension) (A2)
After two-and-a-half years in the UK, non-EEA nationals on the five-year partner or parent route to settlement must pass a SELT in speaking and
listening at A2 level in order to qualify for further leave to remain.

GESE Grade 3 exam (CEFR A2)
– 7 minute speaking and listening test
– Speaking and listening only
– Provisional result received in 24 hours
– Certificate usually sent within 7 days

Indefinite Leave to Remain (to settle) or British Citizenship (B1)
For Indefinite Leave to Remain (to settle) or British Citizenship you must pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) in at least CEFR level B1 in Speaking and Listening.

GESE Grade 5 exam (CEFR B1)
– 10 minute speaking and listening test
– Speaking and listening only
– Provisional result received in 24 hours
– Certificate usually sent within 7 days

You will also need to take a ‘Life in the UK’ Test as part of your application. Visit the government Home Office website for more information about the Life in the UK Test.
